Obwohl wir kein französisch sprechen, gefällt uns die Scheibe – gefühlt [...]]]> In Frankreich gehören Danakil zu den erfolgreichsten Reggae Bands – in Deutschland sind Danakil bisher nahezu unbekannt – im Dezember 2011 haben Sie Ihr Album „Echos Du Temps“ veröffentlicht und vielleicht hast Du Danakil auch schon Live auf Ihrer Release Tour gesehen?!

Obwohl wir kein französisch sprechen, gefällt uns die Scheibe – gefühlt ist es wie in Kindertagen: man hört englische Lieder, versteht leider kein Wort und trotzdem spürt man diese Energie der Musik. ”Echos Du Temps” ist eine wirklich gelungene Produktion mit tollen Sounds.

How did you get into music?

My stepfather was a hip-hop mc and a b-boy in the early 80s. I loved watching him dance and listening to him flow. I was 8 years old then. At 10 years of age I was rapping for the local the radio station and talent shows in school, then at 11 I was on the local news for winning a regional break dance competition. I was deeply into hip hop from age 8 till my early twenties. Then I discovered Bob Marley. I was transformed right away.

Where does your inspiration for the songs is coming from?

I get inspiration from all aspects of life. Some of my lyrics are from my own experiences and some are from what I see to be other people’s experience. Obviously the state of the world plays a big part in my music, as does the ways in which I think we can change it.

You release your new LP “battle the dragon” – how long have you worked on the new album?

I first had the concept about 2 years ago. In fact I had named the album and had the cover art created before I recorded the title track. It took me till now to get the collaborations I wanted and to have the right songs. I recorded about 23 songs and narrowed it down to the 15 that are featured on the album.

What is the main message of your new LP “Battle the Dragon”?

The title says it all. Battle The Dragon. So then the question is, What is the Dragon? The Dragon is ANYTHING that supports oppression.

Will there be some features with other artists on your new LP “battle the dragon”?

The album features Alborosie, J Boog, Gentleman, Peetah Morgan, Stevie Culture, and Perfect.

You record a song with Gentleman which is named “teardrops” on the new LP – what was the inspiration for the song with gentleman? How did it come to this collaboration?

Gentleman has been one of my biggest inspirations since his album Journey to Jah. I know Gentleman to be a conscious man with a spiritual vibe. We could have done a “burn babylon” or a “party” tune, but we wanted to touch on something deeper. We recorded it together in Seattle at Dynasty Records.

Do you have a favorite song on the new album?

I went outside my comfort zone on this album. Songs like “Amoré” and “Where is your Love” were not the typical kind of song you would hear from me but I was very pleased with the way they turned out. In fact it is very hard for me to pick just one favorite but I really do love “Heart like a Lion” featuring Peetah Morgan.

Where did you produced the album?

I recorded all of my vocals in Seattle, WA at Dynasty Records in the US.
